ATSR-112: Training plan requirements (PDF, 76 KB)
A training plan engages the learner in training and gives all parties a better understanding of their roles and responsibilities in the training environment.
Information to get you started
What is it?
The training plan outlines the training to be delivered to the apprentice or trainee by the employer or workplace supervisor and the training organisation. The training plan will state the maximum period of time that the training will take to complete. It is important that the skills required for the apprentice or trainee to perform their job competently and to industry standard are identified in the training plan.
Important facts
The training plan should identify:
-
the purpose of the training plan
-
the circumstances and process for changing the training plan
-
the training plan's role in the completion process for an apprenticeship or traineeship
-
whether training delivery for individual competencies will be in the form of structured training and/or workplace tasks
-
the responsibility of each party for the recording of the training undertaken in the apprentice's or trainee's training record.
The training plan will detail:
-
the employer's name (including legal name) and contact details
-
the apprentice/trainee's name and date of birth
-
the title of the apprenticeship/traineeship
-
the training organisation's name (including legal name) and contact details
-
the commencement of the apprenticeship or traineeship and planned completion date of the apprenticeship or traineeship
-
training contract mode i.e. full time, part time or school-based
-
the qualification/statement of attainment title, including level and NTIS code
-
the name of each competency to be achieved, including its unit code.
The training plan should have provision for the parties to indicate which party is responsible for delivery of structured training and/or workplace tasks for each competency (e.g. providing space for a tick and/or the insertion of a date of delivery against each listed competency).
The training plan should also provide for each party to acknowledge and undertake their responsibility for participating in the negotiation, development and signing of the initial plan within the probationary period:
-
On the part of the apprentices or trainees - to undertake the training and to complete their training record.
-
On the part of the employer - to provide workplace tasks and where indicated, the structured training by the training organisation, and to complete the training record.
-
On the part of the training organisation - the provision of RPL or recognition of skills for the apprentice/trainee; to provide the structured training indicated as soon as possible; to give the apprentice/trainee a training record; and to complete the training record as required.
There must be a separate training plan for each apprentice or trainee in the workplace.
Training plans can be altered for minor issues if all parties agree. If the change is major - for example, a change of qualification or change of training organisation - a new training plan must be prepared and signed by all parties. See changing the training contract on the Apprenticeships Info website for further information.
The parent or guardian is not a party to the training plan and is not required to sign or witness the training plan or changes to the training plan.
The parties must comply with the training requirements outlined in the signed training plan.
Timeframe
The training plan should be negotiated and finalised as early as possible in the apprenticeship or traineeship to enable on-the-job training to commence. This negotiation should take place during the probationary period. The training organisation will send copies of the training plan to all parties once it has been signed.
Training plans for school-based apprentices and trainees
Where the training plan is for a school-based apprentice or trainee, the student's school is not required to be a party to the training plan. However, the school principal is required to be involved in negotiating the impact of the employment and/or training arrangements of the apprenticeship or traineeship on an Education, Training and Employment Schedule. The Education, Training and Employment Schedule (ETES) available on the Apprenticeship Info website is used for this purpose.
The employer, student, school, training organisation and parent/guardian must fully complete and sign the ETES and forward to the Australian Apprenticeships Centre (AAC) before registration of the training contract with the Department of Education and Training can be processed.
