Choose the right apprenticeship or traineeship
Selecting the right apprenticeship or traineeship for your business means:
- deciding what the job entails
- identifying the skills required to do the job
- determining whether the employee needs to be full-time, part-time or school-based.

Recruiting the right person for the apprenticeship or traineeship
Employing an apprentice or trainee is a big commitment. Apprentices and trainees can be employed directly by your business where you will be responsible for managing their employment and training.
To employ an apprentice or trainee directly your business must:
- be able to provide a training and employment opportunity to someone for the term of the apprenticeship or traineeship
- have the range of work and facilities required to train the apprentice or trainee
- have a tradesperson or qualified person who is able to supervise the apprentice or trainee's work-based training.
Apprentices and trainees can be recruited by:
- searching the
Australian Government’s Jobactive or calling their Employer Hotline on 13 17 15
Tradeapprentices.com.au for an out-of-trade apprentice or trainee
ApprenticeshipCentral which aims to match employers with suitable persons
- advertising on recruitment websites, with a recruitment company, in your local paper and with your local training organisations (where you may find students who have finished relevant introductory courses)
- contacting your local high school for details of school-industry partnerships in your local area; to recruit students for a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship or an industry placement; or for an introduction to someone about to leave school
- offering apprenticeships or traineeships to current employees.
If you think your business cannot meet these requirements, you can become a host employer with a group training organisation (GTO). GTOs employ apprentices and trainees and place them with host employers on a short or long-term basis to get hands on experience. Contact the

Employing school-based apprentices and trainees
Employing a school-based apprentice or trainee gives that young person a head start in their career while still attending school and working towards their Queensland Certificate of Education and/or Overall Position (OP).
In addition to these steps, there are specific requirements that employers need to be aware of when employing a school-based apprentice or trainee, such as minimum work days, impacts on timetables, school approval, converting at the end of school - visit the School-based section for details on these requirements.
Choose your training organisation
You and your apprentice or trainee will choose a training organisation who will:
- help you and your apprentice or trainee develop a training plan which outlines when your apprentice or trainee will need to learn and when, and how it will be delivered and assessed
- provide your apprentice or trainee with a training record to document their training
- deliver training and assess your apprentice or trainee's achievement of skills
- issue a qualification to the apprentice or trainee on successful completion of training.
Training organisations can be found by visiting:
- QTIS – lists those training organisations who have a contract with the Queensland Government (for reduced training costs)
Work with an Australian Apprenticeship Support Network (AASN) provider
You will need to contact an AASN provider on 13 38 73 to organise the signing of the training contract. Within 14 days of the apprenticehip or traineeship start date, the training contract must be signed by yourself and your apprentice or trainee (and parent/guardian if applicable and appropriate) and within 28 days, the training contract must be given to the AASN provider.
The AASN provider will lodge the training contract for registration and once registered, you and your apprentice will receive a letter confirming the details. The AASN provider is a free service and will be your first point of contact during the life cycle of the training contract, as well as:
- provide an induction and general information about apprenticeships and traineeships
- advise on your eligibility and help you lodge claims for Australian Government incentives
- make regular contact with you and your apprentice or trainee to check on the progress of training.
Use the probationary period to be sure
Probation is a period of time (generally 90 days for apprenticeships and 30-60 days for traineeships) when the apprentice or trainee and employer work and train together before deciding whether to continue with the apprenticeship or traineeship.
