Monitoring progress

The training organisation is required to:

Monitor training progress

The training organisation is required to monitor the progress of the school-based apprentice or trainee to ensure they are developing the skills and knowledge as outlined in the training plan.

Regular monitoring will help the training organisation confirm that training and assessment is occurring on and off-the-job in line with the training plan, and that the school-based apprentice or trainee is receiving the support they need.

Monitoring is most effective when the training organisation communicates regularly with the school-based apprentice or trainee and their workplace supervisor to:

  • discuss progress
  • identify any further support needed
  • adjust plans for training and assessment as required
  • negotiate further opportunities for training and assessment.

If it is identified that a school-based apprentice or trainee is experiencing difficulties in achieving competence, the training organisation should work with the employer and the school-based apprentice or trainee to develop training and assessment strategies based on the school-based apprentice or trainee's needs.

For more information refer to the Standards for NVR Registered Training Organisations 2012, Part 2, SNR 5, Element 5.4.

Update the training record

The training record must be updated by the training organisation and the employer at least every 3 months

Updating the training record provides an opportunity for all parties to gauge how the school-based apprentice or trainee is progressing in acquiring the necessary skills and competencies.

If it is identified that the school-based apprentice or trainee is not on track with their training, the training organisation should work with the employer and student to resolve any issues that may be hindering progress.

Review the training plan

The training plan should be reviewed regularly by the training organisation in consultation with the employer and the school-based apprentice or trainee.

The training plan should be revised and adjusted as necessary depending on how the school-based apprentice or trainee is progressing.  Any changes to the training plan must be agreed to by all parties.
