Food, Wine and Tourism
The Food, Wine and Tourism Gateway to Industry Schools Program (GISP) aims to help young people make a successful transition from school into further education and or employment in the commercial cookery, wine, hospitality and tourism industries. By blending school, vocational and academic curricula targeted to industry needs, students are learning about these industries and the career opportunities available.
The schools involved, currently identify high school teacher professional development and industry currency as the priority to deliver the aims of the GISP.
Queensland Reference Group
The GISP is steered by the Queensland Reference Group (QRG) for food, wine & tourism which includes key partners such as government and non-government school sectors, industry network bodies such as Queensland Wine, Restaurant & Caterers, QCCI and industry representatives including Star Entertainment Group, Accor Hotels and Resorts, McDonalds, Sunlover and private training organisations and universities. The QRG meets quarterly and is dedicated to support Queensland teachers and students by collaborating and innovating.
The GISP is assisting teachers throughout Queensland to form strong partnerships with the food, wine & tourism industries through regional vocational education and training (VET) groups by:
- raising the profile of careers in food, wine and tourism
- developing and implementing curriculum that encompasses a wide range of food, wine and tourism related activities
- creating opportunities for work experience, structured work placements and school-based apprenticeships and traineeships
- strengthening positive collaborations
- giving young people a head start into the industries
- providing professional development to teachers to enhance their knowledge and skills in food, wine and tourism
- recognising the best and brightest through annual awards.
Professional development and industry currency
Matt Golinski becomes a Gateway Chef
In April 2016, celebrity chef Matt Golinski became the first Gateway Chef for the Food, Wine and Tourism Gateway to Industry Schools program to share his knowledge and skills with the next generation of chefs.
As a Gateway Chef, Matt works with high school culinary teachers through Gateway hubs located around the state, to provide commercial cookery skills in industry workshops. Matt believes becoming the Gateway Chef was a great way for him to engage with teachers and help them understand what skills and qualities chefs in the industry are looking for when hiring young people straight out of school.
Gateway hubs are locations for teachers to join with industry experts for currency, professional development and offer an opportunity to collaborate and network with local industry by joining a regional VET group to assist with industry validation purposes and opportunities.
Gateway hubs are currently located in the following schools trade training centers, to service the following regions:
Sunshine Coast - Maroochydore State High School
Brisbane South - Windaroo Valley State High School
Brisbane North - St Columbans College
Toowoomba - St Josephs College
Cairns - St Marys Catholic College
Rockhampton - North Rockhampton State High School
Townsville - St Margaret Marys College
Industry hosted 'Gateway days' are specially created for high school teachers to gain currency and professional development in industry through 'behind the scenes' tours in each region.

Annual PD tour
The annual high school teacher professional development tour is a trade training intensive, specially designed with industry, to give contextualisation to the teaching of commercial cookery, tourism, events, wine and hospitality. The 2016 tour is scheduled for October 14-17 at Cairns and Mission Beach.
By undertaking study in food, wine and tourism, students have the opportunity to experience a range of careers in the industry like 'Chef to Oenology'. Through a close partnership with the Queensland Tourism Industry Council (QTIC) and Tourism and Events Queensland, Gateway Schools teachers have access to the latest resources including the
QTIC Tourism and Hospitality Careers Guide (PDF, 19.1MB).
Through collaboration and innovation, the following resources have been developed by the QRG through the GISP to support school teachers and registered training organisations to deliver an industry 'best practice' model, providing a successful pathway for students to transition from school to employment through the provision of a 'Work Readiness' program:
