This information is applicable to any party wishing to commence an apprenticeship or traineeship in Queensland. However, school-based apprenticeships and traineeships have specific requirements in addition to the information below - visit the School-based apprenticeships and traineeships eligibility requirements page​ for further details.

Eligibility requireme​nts

Ensure that the individual is eligible to participate in an apprenticeship or traineeship by Queensland by visiting the Eligibility requirements for apprenticeships and traineeships page​.

Choose the right app​renticeship or traineeship

For jobseekers, this means thinking about what they enjoy doing and what their interests are; talking to family, friends, school career counsellors or guidance officers; and gathering information on different career options.

For employers, choosing the right apprenticeship or traineeship means deciding what the job entails; identifying the skills required to do the job; assessing if the workplace has the facilities, range of work and supervision for the chosen apprenticeship or traineeship; and determining whether the employee should be full-time, part-time or school-based.

To find out if the career chosen is approved for delivery as an apprenticeship or traineeship in Queensland, visit the A - Z of apprenticeships and A - Z of traineeships​ on the Queensland Training Information Service (QTIS) website.

For some apprenticeships, jobseekers may like to get a 'taste' for the trade before commencing their apprenticeship. This can be done by participating in a pre-vocational or pre-apprenticeship course.

  • ​​Contact a training organisation who offers training in the trade of interest to check if they offer pre-vocational or pre-apprenticeship courses.
  • Visit the Pre-apprenticeship Course Finder​ on the Australian Apprenticeships Pathways website.

Employm​​ent

Unfortunately the Department of Employment, Small Business and Training does not hold details of job vacancies and therefore is unable to match jobseekers with employers.

However, the department supports the Tradesapprentices.com.au out-of-trade register​ which aims to connect apprentices and trainees with cancelled training contracts with employers.

Find an em​​​ployer

The jobseeker will need to find an employer in their chosen occupation to employ them as an apprentice or trainee. Jobseekers can be employed either:

  • ​Directly by a business, either small or large, who will pay wages and train the apprentice or trainee with the support of a training organisation. Employers can be found by:

  • By a group training organisation (GTO), who organises the training with the training organisation, but places the apprentice or trainee with different businesses (host employers) to gain on-the-job skills. Contact the Apprentice Employment Network​ on 1800 819 747 for local GTOs.

Recruit the right person

Employing an apprentice or trainee is a big commitment. Apprentices and trainees can be employed directly by a business who will be responsible for managing the apprentice or trainee's employment and training.

To employ an apprentice or trainee, a business must:

  • be able to provide a training and employment opportunity to someone for the term of the apprenticeship or traineeship
  • have the range of work and facilities required to train the apprentice or trainee
  • have a tradesperson or qualified person who is able to supervise the apprentice or trainee's work-based training.

Apprentices and trainees can be recruited by:

  • searching the Australian Government's JobActive or calling their Employer Hotline on 13 17 15

  • searching Tradeapprentices.com.au for an out-of-trade apprentice or trainee

  • searching ApprenticeshipCentral​ which aims to match employers with suitable persons

  • advertising on recruitment websites, with a recruitment company or in your local paper

  • contacting local training organisations to connect with students finishing relevant introductory courses; or local high schools to connect with school-industry partnerships or potential school-based apprentices or trainees

  • ​offering apprenticeships or traineeships to current employees

  • using services aimed at under represented groups, such as indigenous, mature age, non-English speaking backgrounds and disability.

Businesses who think they cannot meet the requirements above, could consider becoming a host employer for a group training organisation (GTO). GTOs employ apprentices and trainees and place them with host employers on a short or long-term basis to get hands on experience. Contact the Apprentice Employment Network on 1800 819 747.

Choose th​​​e training organisation

A training organisation will:

  • ​​help to develop a training plan which outlines what the apprentice or trainee will need to learn and when, and how it will be delivered and assessed
  • provide the apprentice or trainee with a training record to document their training
  • deliver training, oversee the off-the-job training provided by the employer and assess the apprentice or trainee's achievement of skills
  • issue a qualification on successful completion of the apprenticeship or traineeship.

The employer and appre​ntic​e or trainee should 'shop around' for a training organisation who meets their needs. Training organisations may offer different methods of training, such as classroom-based, work-based or flexible learning (e.g. online training).

Once the training organisation has accepted the role of training the apprentice or trainee, they will be known as the supervising registered training organisation (SRTO).

The QTIS website​ lists training organisations who offer training in the chosen apprenticeship or traineeship, including those funded by the Queensland Government (for reduced training costs).

Work with an Australian Appren​​​ticeship Support Network (AASN) provider

The Australian Apprenticeship Support Network is a free service and will be the first point of contact during the life cycle of the training contract, as well as:

  • ​provide an induction and general information about apprenticeships and traineeships
  • advice on the parties' eligibility to Australian Government incentives and help to lodge claims
  • make regular contact with the parties to check on the progress of training. 

The employer will need to contact an AASN provider on 13 38 73 to facilitate the signing of the training contract. Strict timeframes apply to the signing and returning of the training contract. The ATIS-027 Training contracts and commencement information sheet​ provides further details.

Use the probation​​ary period to be sure

Probation is a period of time when the apprentice or trainee works and trains with the employer before each decides whether to continue with the apprenticeship or traineeship. The ATIS-023 Probationary periods information sheet​ provides further details.
